Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 medium apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and diced
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon milk (to reach desired consistency)
  • 1/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • 1/4 cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). This ensures the rolls bake evenly and achieve a nice golden color.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the dry ingredients for the dough: flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Stir well until evenly distributed.
  3. Add the softened butter and mix it with the dry ingredients until a crumbly texture forms, about 2-3 minutes with a fork or hand mixer.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk and egg. Slowly pour this mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until a homogeneous dough forms. Avoid overmixing to keep the rolls fluffy.
  5. In another bowl, combine the diced apples with cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), lemon juice, and sugar. Let the mixture sit for about 5 minutes to allow the flavors to develop.
  6. For the cream cheese filling, mix the cream cheese, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and one tablespoon of milk in a bowl until creamy and smooth, about 2-3 minutes.
  7. Roll out the dough on a floured surface until about 1 cm thick. Spread the filling evenly over the dough, leaving about a 1 cm border.
  8. Evenly distribute the apple mixture over the dough, then carefully roll it up from one side to form a long roll, ensuring the filling doesn't spill out.
  9. Cut the roll into about 12 equal pieces and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving enough space between the rolls for them to rise while baking.
  10. Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes until golden brown and cooked through. You can test with a toothpick; it should come out clean.
  11. Remove the rolls from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes before serving. You can serve them warm or drizzle with caramel sauce and sprinkle with chopped nuts.

Keywords: Be careful not to overwork the dough to avoid tough rolls. Ensure that butter and cream cheese are at room temperature for better mixing. Feel free to experiment with spices like ginger or cardamom in the apple filling for added flavor.
